| Tasting menu a fare alternative
At high-end Valley restaurants, tasting menus let you put yourself in a chef's hands, letting him or her dictate what courses you'll have. The result can be a culinary adventure. You may end up trying a dish, or a wine pairing, you may never have ordered. Here are two Southeast Valley spots where you can sample tasting menus. .
Memorial Hospital North: Comfort & Technology
Colorado Springs newest hospital is a month away from opening its doors in one of the fastest growing areas of the city. It has taken since groundbreaking in July of 2004 to get here. Finishing touches are being put on Memorial Hospital North; a hospital that is much needed for residents of northeastern Colorado Springs. "Anybody that lives in Colorado Springs has noticed the huge explosion of growth on the north side of town and there really wasn't any hospital facilities on the north side. The next closest hospital is Sky Ridge to the north all the way to Denver, and then Penrose Main Hospital more to the center part of I-25," said Emergency Department Manager Hope Darrow. The facility is being called a patient-center environment, where comfort is one of the main focuses; but it is not the only plus. The new facility will have the latest technology. The Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum Center (LDRP) is one of the areas that combines comfort and technology. Besides having a flat-screen television and a Jacuzzi, each LDRP room has all the hook-ups for a newborn to recover in the same room as the mother.
Run Like a Fox
I watch Fox News most every night. I watch it at the health spa by day. So, if you're watching, too, you've also probably noticed that the war in Iraq has ended. I don't know if we won or if we lost. I don't know if the Middle East will descend into a killing field unrivaled in the annals of history. I don't know if democracy is in full bloom in Baghdad. I don't know if the terrorists who briefly captured our attention back in 2001 by toppling the World Trade Center are still sipping coffee in Saudi Arabia. I don't know where bin Laden is. I don't know if the price of oil will now go down, or if the price of heroin will rise. But thanks to Fox, I know that Anna Nicole Smith had a nasty taste for prescription drugs. I know her voice caused the hair on my neck to stand up. I know Howard K.

Bears find easy pickings in oldest town
Picking fruit and stowing garbage is the best way to Genoa-proof Sierra black bears, Nevada Division of Wildlife biologist Carl Lackey told town board members on Tuesday. Lackey said Genoa is within 100 yards of classic bear habitat and once they strike garbage, they will be back again and again. Lackey was part of a presentation on a bear-proof container ordinance under consideration by Douglas County commissioners. If approved, Douglas would be the first in Nevada to apply an ordinance countywide. Under the ordinance, a resident would have to get a bear-proof container after a second complaint of bears in their garbage in two years. Residents would not have to purchase the containers upon approval of the ordinance, but they would if they were cited.
