Lodge cures winter blues

A spa weekend at Cherry Valley Lodge's newly opened Banyan Leaf Spa is good for what ails winter-weary souls. Cabin fever-crazed kids will appreciate CoCo Key, a tropically themed 50,000-square-foot water park heated to a balmy 84 degrees. And it's all nearby, in Newark, just east of Columbus.

The 1,500-square-foot Banyan Leaf spa opened in January at the 200-room resort in Licking County, just a stone's throw from Denison University and the quaint village of Granville. Founded in 1805, Granville boasts one of the best collections of early 1800s Greek revival architecture in the state. In April, the village hosts an art and daffodil festival.

The Banyan Leaf Spa, done in a tranquil sea foam shade, complete with sauna, hair salon and treatment rooms for facials and massage, features competently delivered services in a family-oriented resort setting.

Cinderella and Me: A night in the castle

I am in hundreds of strangers' vacation pictures — the bewildered guy in the sputtering truck at the front of the Walt Disney World parade. I'm sitting next to Daisy Duck and wearing mouse ears embroidered with my name, waving like an idiot and smiling like I just won a toaster. .

High-tech suits help preserve tradition

LOS ANGELES -- Amana Siddiqi loved swimming as a child but gave it up as a teenager because her Muslim faith required she fully cover her body in public.

"At age 15, I started to cover, so I stopped going to public pools," said Siddiqi, now 27, whose parents come from India and Pakistan. "Most of my friends stopped, too. They felt self-conscious."

Then last summer Siddiqi bought a specially made swimsuit that covers her body while allowing full motion -- and went snorkeling and rode watercraft and slides while on vacation in Hawaii.

Muslim girls and women are increasingly participating in athletic activities, especially as second- and third-generation children of immigrants grow up surrounded by American influences. But doing so requires them to overcome a seemingly large obstacle: Islam's traditional emphasis on modest dress.
